Since qualifying in 2012 I have gained a wide range of experience supporting children, teenagers and young adults with a variety of speech, language and communication difficulties. I love working with such a wide age range of clients as every day is varied, challenging and fun at the same time!
Currently, one part of my work involves providing assessment, therapy and training within mainstream schools. The other part involves supporting private clients. I very much enjoy both parts of my job as they involve working as a team, together with parents and nursery/school staff to support the child’s needs. I strongly believe that working together is the key to a child’s progress and success. This was a crucial part of my role when working as a specialist volunteer in Bolivia (South America) in 2012 to 2013, before I joined at The Talking House team. In La Paz (the capital of Bolivia) I supported children and young adults with a wide range of speech, language and communication difficulties in deprived and rural areas. The families I came across did not have access to the services and support from professionals they needed due to where they lived and their life conditions. In addition, the children often did not go to school due to their disabilities. Therefore, a significant part of my work involved working with and training parents and family members to understand the child’s needs and what they could do to support them on a day to day basis. This unique experience has significantly influenced my attitude and approach towards my current work, both with private clients and within school settings.
An area I am particularly passionate about is working with individuals with selective mutism (SM) and social anxiety difficulties. I have experience working directly with both children and adults as well as working with school staff and parents on joint goal setting and for training purposes. To support my work with this client group, in 2015 I completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Counselling and Interpersonal Skills at Leeds Beckett University. I am also actively involved in the Selective Mutism Clinical Excellence Network (CEN) that gives me the opportunity to keep my skills and knowledge up to date with current research as well as share expertise with other speech and language therapists and professionals who work in this field. Currently, I am also developing my skills to work with children who stammer through training at the Michael Palin Stammering Centre.
Being part of the small friendly team of therapists at The Talking House is great as we can share experiences, expertise and opinions around how to best provide speech and language therapy to suit each and every one of our clients!
