For those long car journeys

You have a car journey ahead of you and you need to keep the kids happy and occupied.

Here are our top 10 games to play in the car…

  1. Sound Word Categories

You can start this game by agreeing on 3-5 categories of words e.g. animals, flowers, boy’s names. Then choose a letter sound that everyone has to use. The fastest person to name their words is the winner. So, if the sound is ‘s’ the words might be snake, snowdrop, Sam.

  2. Rhyming Words

Choose a word that’s easy to rhyme like ‘pin’. Take turns to come up with a word that rhymes with it. The winner is the person who is the last one to think of a rhyming word

  3. Guess the Song

Someone chooses a song and they have to hum the first line. The winner is the first person to guess the song. If no one gets it with the first line, the person has to hum the next line and so on until someone guesses the song.

  4. Twenty Questions

Someone has to think of an object, person or a place. The others have to ask questions (up to a maximum of 20) to guess what it is. The questions can only be answered with a yes or a no.

  5. Yes/No

One person has to answer questions truthfully without saying the words ‘yes’ or ‘no’.

  6. Word Association

Someone starts with a word and the next person has to come up with a word that is associated with it. So, an example might be ‘bird’ fly’ ‘trees’ ‘nest’ ‘chicks’ ‘hen’ egg’ ‘scramble’ and so on. The game ends if a word is repeated or you get stuck.

  7. The Never Ending Story

You can do this as a whole sentence or a word at a time. Take turns to add the next bit. So, it might be ‘It’ ‘was’ ‘a’ ‘sunny’ ‘ day’ ‘and’ ‘the’ ‘frog’ ‘wanted’ ‘a’ ‘party’….. It can be as silly or as sensible as you like

  8. In a Minute

Choose a letter sound for each person. Each person has to name as many words beginning with that sound in one minute. The person who names the most is the winner

  9. I Spy – A Classic

You can make it easier for little ones e.g. I spy something that I can eat.

  10. Spotto – Another Classic

Choose an item that you want to spot e.g. red cars, bicycles, road signs. The winner is the person who spots the most on the journey.
