I graduated in 2008 as a Speech and Language Therapist and went on to work both within the NHS and Private Practice. I have enjoyed working collaboratively within a team of Speech and Language Therapists as well as working in wider organisations with other Health/Education professionals. I have predominately worked with children, but also have experience of working with adults on the autistic spectrum running social skills groups.
I joined the Talking House in December 2017 to provide assessments, therapies and training to children and their families/schools. I work in a variety of settings – client’s homes, private clinics, nurseries and schools. I believe this is an effective way to work, seeing a client in their home/school environment provides a wider understanding of the child and their needs.
I have a vast amount of knowledge and experience in the management of speech and language delay/disorder, specific language impairment (SLI), stammering, hearing impairment, dyspraxia, autism, learning difficulties and complex needs. I have worked in a variety of settings including Language Resource Bases (within a school), Schools for Children with Autism, Special Schools and Health Centres. I have provided a range of speech and language therapy training courses to school staff, health professionals and parents.
My Specialist areas are working with children with autism and children with specific language impairment (SLI). I continue to develop and share my knowledge of Intensive Interaction, Attention Autism, Lego therapy, SCERTS, PECS, Makaton and visual aids to enhance the child’s communication skills. During my time spent working in Language Resource Bases I have developed a specialist interest in Specific Language Impairment (SLI). I have developed expertise in the assessment and diagnosis of SLI. I have also delivered training and intervention to children, teaching staff and parents using the Colourful Semantics, Word Aware and Basic Shape Coding approaches.
I enjoy building a rapport with children, making activities both fun and educational. I feel very lucky to have a job that allows me to empower individuals with the right tools to support their child with speech, language and communication needs. Parents and teaching staff play a vital role in adapting a child’s communication environment which enables them to reach their full potential.
The Talking House provides an excellent service and has an innovative and supportive Speech and Language Therapy team. It provides training and support not only to it’s clients, but also to the Speech and Language Therapists who are continually developing their skills and knowledge in line with evidence based practice. I am passionate about continuing to support children with speech, language and communication needs through an outstanding service that The Talking House offers.
