I qualified as a speech and language therapist in 2011 and went on to work with adults with communication and swallowing impairments within the NHS. I was able to work part time at The Talking House during this time and have been a part of the team since March 2012. I became a fulltime member of the team in September 2013 and am now head of Customer Relations.
I am trained in the use of Makaton sign and the Lidcombe Programme, for young children who
stammer. I have completed training in Talktools, a therapy approach which uses specific exercises and tools to focus on the motor mechanics of speech, an area of interest of mine. I am a member of a local Specific Language Impairment Special Interest Group, which helps me keep up to date with research in this area, allowing me to keep my practice current. I have also attended a workshop focusing on teaching speech to non-verbal individuals with Autism. I am trained in the management of swallowing disorders in adults, and hope to transfer these skills to help the children I am working with in the future.
I currently work with children and young people who have a variety of speech, language or communication difficulties including speech and language delay and/or disorder, motor speech difficulties, Autism and specific language impairment. I complete therapy in a range of settings; at our base in Boston Spa, in schools and nurseries, and within clients’ homes.
In my spare time I enjoy being outdoors and feel being outside can have a really positive impact on therapy outcomes and on learning in general. I have been able to complete therapy with lots of children through outdoor activities and have found this to be very successful and also lots of fun! I also enjoy completing practical activities with the children such as painting, arts and crafts and messy play and like to involve the child’s interests in my management.
I love my job and enjoy seeing children have fun in therapy, making progress and becoming more confident individuals.
