Games to play during car journeys to help with speech and language development
You have a car journey ahead of you and you need to keep the kids happy and occupied. Don’t worry – we’re here to help! Our boss (Julie) has written this blog to share a few of her favourite games to play in the car.
Sound Word Categories
You can start this game by agreeing on 3-5 categories of words e.g. animals, flowers, boys names. Then choose a letter sound that everyone has to use. The fastest person to name their words is the winner. So, if the sound is ‘s’ the words might be: snake, snowdrop, Sam.
The Never Ending Story
You can do this as a whole sentence or a word at a time. Take turns to add the next bit. So, it might be ‘It’ ‘was’ ‘a’ ‘sunny’ ‘ day’ ‘and’ ‘the’ ‘frog’ ‘wanted’ ‘a’ ‘party’…
It can be as silly or as sensible as you like!
Someone starts with a word and the next person has to come up with a word that is associated with it. So, an example might be ‘bird’ fly’ ‘trees’ ‘nest’ ‘chicks’ ‘hen’ egg’ ‘scramble’ and so on. The game ends if a word is repeated or you get stuck.
