Meet Kathryn

Here, Kathryn talks about what motivated her to become a Speech and Language Therapist, her experience, her training and qualifications, and areas of Speech and Language Therapy that she is particularly passionate about.

Why did you want to become a Speech and Language Therapist?​

My passion for helping people with speech and communication difficulties started when my daughter struggled with speech sounds as a child. Speech and Language Therapy was so valuable for her confidence, in reducing confusion and frustration and also it really enhanced the way we listened and spent time with each other.

I am passionate for children and young people to raise their confidence and realise their many strengths through the Speech and Language Therapy input I provide.

What kind of experience do you have?​

After qualifying as an SLT, I worked with both children and adults with acquired brain injuries. This gave me a variety of experiences that included working in schools, residential homes, private client homes and with case managers alongside the larger multidisciplinary team as part of personal injury claims. From here my interests grew within children’s developmental Speech and Language difficulties and I then became a full-time member of the Team at The Talking House in September 2019. ​

At The Talking House, I work in mainstream and specialist schools in Leeds. I also have the opportunity of working with children and their families privately in our clinic. ​

I am always keen to discover new ways of being able to make a positive difference in a person’s life journey. This has not changed since my role as a staff nurse in ICU and A&E at the Leeds Teaching Hospitals and now, as a Speech and Language Therapist, I can continue to seek out different ways by using my passion for finding out the latest research and sharing creative ideas of providing therapy that is fun and that works. ​

What are you particularly passionate about?​

I am particularly interested in supporting children and young people with an acquired brain injury, especially the teens, who are already going through much change at this significant part of their lives. ​

Whilst at The Talking House I have particularly enjoyed working with individuals and groups of teenagers, getting to know them and exploring effective ways of supporting them with their individual needs, whether this is focused on making friends, realising their own goals, listening, organising skills, speech skills, understanding information or in their abilities to express themselves effectively.​

I am also interested in working with children’s speech sound difficulties. Whilst at The Talking House I have had the opportunity to train in ‘Talk Tools’ level 2 where tactile feedback can be effective in helping a child with speech and I have also attended an articulation disorders course, led by Dr. Anne Harding Bell at Birmingham University where I was updated in the most recent evidence based therapy to support children with a variety of speech sound disorders. ​

What are your hobbies and interesting facts about you?​

When I am not thinking about Speech and Language Therapy, I love to sing and play piano and I enjoy going to the gym for a ‘Crossfit’ style workout!
