Vocabulary is a strong indicator of academic success. The size of a child’s vocabulary at age 5 is the best predictor of success on exams in later life. Supporting vocabulary development requires a whole-school approach to word learning. We have put together advice for implementing a three-wave approach to encouraging word learning: explicit and intentional teaching; incidental learning through creating a word-rich environment; and the use of independent word learning strategies.
